Airport railways for Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail trial in September, Da Lat railway restoration
Welcome to the Southeast Asia Railways Newsletter. I was in Sumatra at the start of the month where I rode the main lines of the North Sumatra Railways. I will have a guide for that railway at Nomadic Notes.
The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway didn’t open as planned, so I will include that on my next visit to Indonesia.
Here are the main news stories of the month for railways in Southeast Asia.
News
🇰🇭 Cambodia
There are new airports being built for Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and they are both a long distance from the city centre. Light railways have been proposed for both airports.

🇮🇩 Indonesia
The high-speed railway project has been delayed again. It now looks like test runs in September and opening in October.

🇱🇦 Laos

The Johor Baru-Woodlands cross-border shuttle runs infrequently, and the peak-hour tickets sell out a month in advance. This is the easiest win to immediately reduce overcrowding at the border crossing.
